Outreach

Habitat for Humanity

The congregation of St. Luke's is dedicated to the mission of Habitat for Humanity - to work with people in need to renovate and build decent, affordable housing.  To that end, St. Luke's has committed to make a monthly donation to Habitat as well as provide volunteers for local projects.  Recently, St. Luke's pledged to fund the roof for Habitat's current house that they are building for a local veteran.  As of November, 2011 we reached our goal of raising the full amount for this worthy project.

Manna House Ministries of Effingham County

Manna House is a local charity that provides food to needy families in Effingham County.  It is also a thrift shop selling low-cost furniture, housewares, clothing, books, toys, bicycles, jewelry, and baby items to anyone who wishes to shop.  Manna House also provides "burn-out" assistance to families who have lost their homes and/or belongings to fire.  During the months of May through July, Manna House provides snack bags for up to 200 children a month, helping to bridge the gap during the summer months when the Back-Pack Ministries are on hiatus.   In the Fall, Manna House has a huge "Back-to-School" sale providing uniforms, book bags, and school supplies, such as paper, pencils, pens, crayons, notebooks, etc. The congregation of St. Luke's donates food on a regular basis and has several members who volunteer their time every week at Manna House.  If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information, please contact Lynn Stacy or Cathy Brock.

Care For The Troops
"To care for those who have borne the battle, and their spouses, children, and families."

St. Luke’s is a lead congregation for Care For The Troops.  As such, the congregation seeks to raise and maintain awareness of the needs of military members and their families who are sacrificing time and efforts to support our country.   It bears the title of a “military friendly congregation” by recognizing the contributions made by military members and their families. St. Luke's works to acknowledge the physical, spiritual, and material needs of veterans and their families and offer an extended hand to assist them in any challenges.  It has adopted a specific program of collecting items for care packages on a regular basis and shipping them to those serving overseas.  St. Luke’s has been the host site for specialized training for clergy members and congregation leaders on how to better meet the specific pastoral care needs of military families and ensure their churches are a long-term source of comfort and honor for veterans and their families.  For more information, please contact Gina Farrell

Back Pack Ministries

Back Pack Ministries was founded by several members of St. Luke's in the Spring of 2008, and is operated by the congregation and youth of St. Luke's, in conjunction with the Effingham Sunrise Rotary Club, local food banks, and community volunteers. Its purpose is to help feed needy children at Guyton Elementary School by providing them with non-perishable food to take home in their back packs.  The back packs are filled each week by the youth of St. Luke's with donated food and delivered to the children's homerooms every Friday morning to be taken home.  Last year, 43 children at Guyton Elementary were served through this program, which continues to grow every year.  If you are interested in volunteering to help with this ministry or would like more information, please contact Krissie Calvert or Helen Hyde.
